Metabolic Testing
If you’d like a more accurate nutritional assessment…
The BodyGem indirect calorimeter is a device that accurately measures oxygen consumption to determine resting metabolic rate (RMR). Your RMR is the amount of calories (energy) your body uses each day without activity. RMR varies from person to person. Getting your RMR measured can provide important information to help you achieve your nutrition goals.
Other than it’s name, the BodyGem is the same indirect calorimeter as the MedGem, which is a clinically-validated and FDA 510K-cleared, class II, medical device for measurement of RMR
Available to those who work individually with Sarah and also to those with outside providers
Cost is $75 (insurance is not accepted) and is due at the time of service
Before your test:
Refrain from eating or drinking for 4 hours (water is ok)
Refrain from exercise (aerobic or strength training) for 4 hours
Refrain from consuming caffeine, nutritional supplements or medications containing pseudoephedrine for 4 hours
Refrain from smoking or using nicotine for 1 hour
When you arrive at the office, you will relax 10 minutes before the test is performed
The BodyGem measurement is easy to obtain and takes only about 10 minutes to provide your individualized RMR results — you will sit in a quiet and relaxed environment wearing a nose clip and breathing into a mouthpiece
You will be provided with an emailed report of your results — it will include your RMR, as well as several nutritional recommendations based on your activity level and weight goal
The entire appointment will take 30 minutes or less
For those who struggle with an eating disorder — the report may be triggering and it may make the most sense for your provider to receive a copy of the results (instead of you) and for them to decide how to use the results to support you in your recovery
